Rolls-Royce believes in looming break-even for autonomous shipping

After investing over GBP 100 million over the past few years, orders for autonomous technology began ticking in to Rolls-Royce last year. The company expects to soon book black figures on its major investment area, says director Kevin Daffey to ShippingWatch.

What started as a discussion approximately five years ago at Rolls-Royce is soon expected to become a profitable business for the maritime supplier.

The debate about autonomous vessels and intelligent ships began to pick up in the shipping industry last year, where several projects were launched and the topic was debated by players such as carriers which were seeking concrete advantages to justify investments. Manufacturers on the other hand, spoke about why the benefits of the technology extend far beyond test projects and trials.
