World fleet significantly older than a decade ago

While many shipowners are reluctant to invest in newbuilds due to uncertainty about new green fuels, the world fleet is getting older. The average age is currently two and a half years above the level ten years ago.

Uncertainty about which fuels to bank on in the future has made many shipowners hold back from investing in new tonnage. At least that is what several of them say when asked why they are not buying new ships and why the order book within a segment such as dry bulk is historically low at the moment.
