Consultants: Downturn could halt ballast water market

UK-based Global Water Intelligence projected in 2015 that the market for ballast water systems held potential for investments of up to USD 45.6 billion over five years. But the current crisis in the shipping sector makes today's estimate more modest.

The challenging times in the shipping sector mean that the carriers are not rushing to sign orders to install ballast water management systems in spite of the fact that IMO's ballast water convention is set to come into force later in the year, and that the US Coast Guard (USCG) has started to approve systems for use in US waters, says Christopher Gasson, publisher at UK-based consulting firm Global Water Intelligence (GWI), to ShippingWatch.
