Carbon War Room believes in CSR as business model

So far the shipping industry has not been at the forefront in regards to CSR, says president of the NGO Carbon War Room, José Maria Figueres. Next step is to incorporate it in companies' business models, he tells ShippingWatch.

The shipping industry could become much better at using CSR than it is today, says José Maria Figueres, president of the NGO Carbon War Room, which works toward, among other things, reducing the global CO2 emissions. Because there is a direct link to becoming profitable again if companies use CSR in the right way, he says.

Many global industries are now working more or less actively with CSR strategies. For carriers such as Maersk Line and Norden, it is a stated goal to signal that the companies work with and focus on sustainability, whether in terms of the environment, human rights, working conditions, or corruption. The shipping companies publish annual reports about their results.
